I get my new phone tomorrow (I hope)
Assuming T-mobile didn’t lie to me, there should be a nice, new Nokia 6600 sitting on my desk in the morning at work. I know it’s not the absolute newest phone out there (namely, Nokia has a Nokia 6620, and a 6630 on the way) but it is one of the most advanced that is currently supported by iSync, Apple’s phone syncing program. The 6620 broke iSync, and, well, that’s a big thing to me.
I’m hoping for better signal strength than with my current Sony Ericsson, and the 6600 has a nice shiny new Java VM, so I can not only download add-in programs, but I can also write some myself. That should be fun. Among the very first things I want to install are MAME (so I can play Pac-Man, Galaga, and maybe even Pole Position) and the Opera browser.
If anyone is even remotely interested, I can post about some of my adventures, which will include syncing it the first time, installing applications, installing ringtones and wallpaper, and making it work as a bluetooth modem for my Powerbook G4. Oh, who am I kidding? No one is interested, and I will post about it anyway.
There is a telnet client for the 6600 that would allow me to log into my linux box at home, and control it from the phone. Alan has threatened to leave me on the side of the road somewhere if I do that during our vacation
I’ll have to try that when I get back, I guess.
I’m sorry, have you forgotten there are fellow geeks (or, in my case, geekettes) reading along here?!
I’ve got shivers imagining all the exciting things you can do with this phone. But telnetting into your Linux box may be the most impressive.
I keep thinking I should get a phone that will do all this cool stuff, but my e-mail/internet addiction is such that any more connectivity would probably be a bad thing.
And don’t think I won’t do it!!
Phone’s not here yet, but it is on the truck, in Coppell… /pant, /pant
Am I the only person in the world who progams for a living and DOESN’T get all crazy in my pants over telnetting into a linux box?
Guess so. (Yes, it showed up)
Hell, I connected my Powerbook to the internet wirelessly before I actually placed a call on the thing.
You’re such a damned geek.
Which is why I like you so much.
